This shiny new app gives an amazing first impression, but the question you’re probably asking yourself right now is whether it succeeds in utilizing the limited resources of its platform to bring us a worthwhile poker experience. Fortunately, in this case the answer is a resounding yes – and we have given it hours upon hours of rigorous testing to tell you exactly why.

Once you download and install the 888 Android poker app, you will need a real money account to access its functionality as the first thing you will see upon running it will be the log-in screen. The download process itself is fairly simple, all you need to do is fill in the registration form and follow the download instructions.
Obviously, you can register for a new account directly from the app using your mobile device’s web browser, but I wouldn’t really recommend that, as putting in all the necessary information can take a lot of time. Nevertheless, if for some reason you are unable to use a standard computer to complete this task, you should be happy to learn that all the forms are laid out across a few extremely mobile-friendly pages, which makes the whole process considerably less frustrating – especially if your Android device is equipped with a keyboard.

The slider located at the bottom of the screen allows you to decide whether you want to play using real money or not, but I recommend picking Practice Play if you’ve never used this particular app before just to get familiar with its interface and the general flow of the game – which, I am happy to say, is extremely smooth.
Navigating the menus is a simple and intuitive process, as all the buttons and sliders are clearly marked and easy to use. The graphics do a great job in terms of bringing the tried and tested 888 visual theme to a mobile platform and there’s even some room for customization, as the app allows you to disable chat and choose whether you want to use two- or four-colored card decks.
The cash games tab allows you to narrow your selection down even further by adjusting the stakes, the number of players and game type. While the app gives you a lot of room to maneuver in terms of stakes, which range from 5c/10c to $3/$6, the remaining options leave some room for improvement, as the only available settings are 6-max/10-max tables and No Limit/Fixed Limit games. This rather limited range of available cash games might seem surprising given the fact that Practice Play has a different set of settings to pick from – but in the end, it’s not a big deal since all the most popular choices are there. Unfortunately, much like its iPhone counterpart, the Android app doesn’t allow you to select your table or even see how many players are sitting at the table you are joining, making table selection extremely hard if not downright impossible.
When it comes to the Sit & Go section, you are allowed to choose between 2, 6 or 9 players and Normal, Turbo or Super Turbo speed modes. The buy-ins range from $1 all the way up to $55, so there shouldn’t be any problems with finding some action with this app regardless of the size of your bankroll. Once you click the “Play” button, you will be moved to the tournament lobby and the game will begin as soon as the table fills.
Regrettably, as of right now the only poker variant in operation is Texas Hold’em, although 888 have added multi-tabling functionality to both their iOS and Andorid apps. We're pretty sure 888 will introduce additional poker variants in the near future and since most of the competing apps have similar limitations, it’s hard to seriously consider this a major drawback.

As mentioned above, the 888 Android poker app does an amazing job in terms of translating the look and feel of its traditional, PC-based older brother, but what really makes it shine is exceptional functionality. Unlike several other poker companies, which released apps that disregard the particularities of mobile gaming in the past few years, the 888 app comes well prepared and passes the reality check with flying colors.
The cards are readily recognizable no matter what kind of deck you are using, and the function buttons like call, raise or fold are all color coded, which makes playing the game almost instinctive after an hour or two. As you’d expect from one of the industry leaders, the usual auto-post blinds, auto-muck hand and auto re-buy functions are readily available and what’s more, the app runs quite well even on older hardware, so it is basically impossible to experience any deal-breaking slowdowns or lags. All in all, it seems clear to me that this particular app was created with a lot of love, by people knowledgeable about what makes for a smooth mobile gameplay experience.
In terms of competition, 888 veterans definitely won’t be surprised by what they’re going to face when using the mobile version of the client. Most of the competition is extremely fishy, making this app a perfect choice even for players who are still learning the game and haven’t developed a complete, well-rounded poker skillset. While desktop users might still hold an edge in terms of table selection, the influx of mobile players who don’t take poker very seriously should be enough to make this app quite a lucrative money-machine for everyone willing to put some effort into learning the game.

All in all, the 888 Android app is a great entry on the ever more crowded mobile poker market. Obviously, you shouldn’t download it expecting the full functionality of a desktop-based client, but it does an amazing job at bringing you what’s best about the 888 experience for a program allowing you to play poker literally from anywhere in the world while using nothing more than your cell phone.
Unlike the developers of other, similar apps, the people standing behind 888 apparently never forgot about the limitations of the devices their product was to run on, and the end result is simply superb. The whole package feels super-tight and is exceptionally accessible, while the mobile-friendly design makes it easy to use and navigate. You won’t find any unnecessary features here, as everything has its place which, along with a soft player pool, makes it one of the best Android poker apps currently available.
