Fanduel Sportsbook is a joke; specifically their 'Geo-Locating Software'. I placed my first and ONLY bet with Fanduel Sportsbook 2 weeks ago and it was like pulling teeth. Trying to bet in Tennessee and having geolocation issues? We hear you. Our sports betting geolocation troubleshooting guide is here to help you get back on with placing your wager.

Sports betting in Tennessee is now live. It officially became legal in the Volunteer State in May 2019 and launched on November 1, 2020. However, unlike other states with a legal sports betting market, all wagering in Tennessee must be done online. If you are in New Jersey, you could visit a retail sportsbook and place a bet in person, but that isn’t the case in TN. Although having the freedom to use betting apps has numerous benefits, some issues must be addressed.

One of the most annoying things when using any piece of technology is it breaking down. For example, you have chosen your sports betting app, registered for an account, and are ready to start wagering as quickly as possible. However, just as you are about to place a bet, you receive a “we can’t locate you” error message. When it comes to online or mobile sports betting, this is called a geolocation error.

Read on to see what geolocation is, how it works, and how to fix it if you’re having sportsbook problems.

Sportsbooks with Most Accurate Geolocation

There are some fantastic sportsbooks available in Tennessee with extremely accurate geolocation services in place, including:

New Player $600 Risk Free Bet
Claim A New Player $1,000 Free Bet

The DraftKings mobile sportsbook is a great platform that allows bettors to bet on the go and marks their exact location wherever they are in Tennessee. However, we encountered quite a few problems with the FanDuel sportsbook. We were presented with the FanDuel geocomply no token error message too regularly and would recommend using DraftKings or BetMGM over FanDuel.

Other sportsbooks that could be launching in Tennessee with accurate geolocation services include the BetRivers sportsbook app and William Hill Sportsbook.

The term ‘geolocation‘ will be very familiar to those who have experience using online betting sites or a mobile app. Geolocation is a technology that is used to pinpoint your exact location to make sure you can legally place a wager. For example, you might have downloaded a sportsbook app in Pennsylvania or New Jersey and signed up for an account. You then travel to another state where betting has yet to be legalized. While there, you access your sportsbook account but receive a message such as ‘DraftKings location not found’ or ‘DraftKings not working.’ This is DraftKings geolocation swinging into action and not accepting bets in states where it is illegal.

It can be very annoying if you are close to the border trying to place a bet. Let’s say you are in Memphis and trying to get a bet on but seeing a geolocation problem error message. Man, it’s annoying! There are steps you can take to fix this which we cover below.

Current Issues with Geolocation

Nowadays, we expect that technology should work seamlessly at all times and be fast and reliable. I’m sure we all hate it when browsing on the internet, and a sudden unexpected network communications error appears. Geolocation can be faulty like any other software, and all operators will have a list of troubleshooting tips to help you overcome them. Some standard warnings you may encounter when trying to place a bet on your mobile device or desktop include ‘geolocation not working,’ ‘player location check geocomply,’ or ‘Android location services not working.’ This can be irritating for the player, and they will want it to be remedied immediately.

The industry is aware of the issue, and there are ongoing talks about how to address these problems as mobile and online sports betting continues to grow. The rules on legal sports betting in the US state that all wagering platforms must employ geolocation technology and only accept bets from players physically located within state lines or face hefty fines.

For the location technology to work efficiently, it requires both software and hardware designed to “fence” devices. Take Indiana as an example, where online gambling is legal; the state is virtually “fenced,” meaning bettors can download apps within state borders without hassle. Issues arise when you consider other states, such as Mississippi, where betting on sports is legal on a mobile device as long as you are located at a physical casino. Consequently, another type of ‘geofence’ needs to be used.

There are geolocation vendors available, such as GeoComply, that must be flexible to overcome recurring issues. For example, in various states, sports betting won’t occur in a casino but in smaller venues that are difficult to find. In these small remote venues, hardware needs to be downloaded to block players from wagering until they are located somewhere with an interactive sportsbook.

When using a computer or laptop to bet, make sure you download the geocomply plugin. This will mean any unexpected network communications error messages are more unlikely to appear.

How Sportsbooks Could Overcome Location Problems

last night we encountered some issues with geo-tech and wanted to resolve them as quickly as possible. We looked into how sportsbooks can efficiently address such problems. One option open to them is to train their staff who work at kiosks all about the technology and how it works. If one staff member wants to know ‘what is player location check’? They can be trained. As a result, any obstacles that present themselves can be overcome by knowledgeable staff.

Additionally, sportsbooks could invest in numerous multiple hardware pieces, so if one breaks down, there are still working back-ups.

Plenty of state lawmakers have expressed their concern about how geofencing will work in practice in their locations. The only way to allay these fears is for geo services to become even more accurate, to the inch, to stop any potential breaches.

Dealing with Location Issues with a Sportsbook

It is one of the most common queries we get; Why do I get geolocation warnings, and how can I fix them? If you have no idea why the sportsbook can’t ‘geolocate me,’ here are some new steps you could try:

Ensure you are physically located in a state with legal sports betting and make sure that the location services are turned on in the settings on your cell, or tablet. If they are turned on and it still doesn’t work, try restarting your phone. If you are still having problems, try uninstalling the app and download it again. When you have done that, go into location services and click ‘allow,’ open the app, and log in.

These are the steps that were taken from us on several occasions, and they work more often than not.

Turning on Location Settings on your Mobile

You may not know how to turn on geolocation on your mobile device. It is vital that a sportsbook can access your location, whatever jurisdiction you are in. If you have an iOS device, you can locate this setting in:

  1. Settings
  2. Privacy
  3. Location services (toggle on)
  4. Access the app and confirm to share location

For Android users, the location settings can be found in:

  1. Settings
  2. Location (toggle set to on)
  3. App permissions
  4. Find the app
  5. Select Allow all the time or when using the app.

Is GeoComply Efficient?

They are pretty faultless, but some external factors can affect them occasionally (such as a weak signal or the Wi-Fi failing). They can pinpoint exactly where you are to within a few inches when outside; however, being inside poses more of a problem due to walls and roofs hampering the signal. You may have dropped your cell and damaged the GPS receiver, it may have water damage, there could be lots of reasons your mobile’s GPS isn’t working effectively.

Why Sportsbooks need to use geolocation

Although online gambling is growing, it is not legal in every state, so online operators will need to prove you are in a state that does permit iGaming. The most straightforward way to do this is to use your location feature that is built into your mobile device. Geolocation, or GeoComply, is accurate and safe.

This technology is still in its infancy, so we expect it to get better over time. This means fewer people will have encountered an unexpected network fault and can enjoy a better gambling experience. We advise against using a VPN. Players trying to use a DraftKings VPN will be blocked utilizing all of the site’s features due to active software detecting you are using a VPN.

Instead, bettors in Tennessee can sign up today with BetMGM or DraftKings sportsbook and enjoy a seamless betting experience.

Are you are going crazy trying to get your bet on but having annoying geolocation issues? Don’t worry, we are here to help.

Your thinking how can an online technology company get this so wrong? What the hell is going on?? Don’t panic, your not alone. Geolocation issues with online sportsbooks, apps, and betting sites are pretty common. Luckily, it is quite easy to fix as well.

If you are asking yourself why do sportsbooks need to know my location, it’s because sports betting is not legal in all US states. It is a legal requirement of a sportsbook to be able to confirm you are physically in a regulated state. Sports betting is now legal online & mobile in over 20 US states including Colorado, NJ, IN, PA, IL, IO, WV, and PA.

Throughout life, you will always find some products that are better than others. Some boxers better than others, football teams better than others, and that’s also the case with sportsbook operators. Some sportsbooks use awful companies to use geolocating software, some use better ones.

The 2 best operators we have used extensively, in several states and had the least problems with are:

Worst online sportsbook & app using geolocation

The unfortunate title has to go to FanDuel sportsbook, who we have had the most issues with. Some of the most annoying error messages we have come across from the operator is FanDuel sportsbook geocomply no token, bet rejected geocomply no token, and Unable to Verify Location. To say this is annoying when trying to place a wager mid-game is an understatement. You can be sat at the bar in Denver, watching the game, and just want to bet. Open the app, try and place the bet and hit one of these errors.

Fixing geolocation errors

So what we can we do about it? Well, the best thing we can advise is, first of all, use one of the 2 best sportsbooks using geolocation software, which are the DraftKings sportsbook app, or BetMGM sports app. Secondly, you can use at least 2 sportsbooks, then if one is playing up (even the best have issues sometimes) you always have a backup.

Laptop or PC

When you are betting on a computer, PC, or laptop, an operator can pinpoint your location using your IP address. Every internet connection will have its own unique IP address that is listed with your provider. Every house will have its own unique IP address and this location is stored with your provider. If you live close to a state border, your IP may be incorrectly listed in the wrong state. The only way to fix this is to speak to your provider.

If you are using Wi-Fi on your laptop, then this may also cause issues if the signal is weak. You may also have problems if you are near a large body of water. All of these problems can lead to geolocation problems. It is quite easy to fix. You can use a geolocation plugin, such as GeoComply which is a browser attachment and normally cures the problem 9/10. Player location checks using geocomply are easy to do and can save you a lot of hassle.

You also may need to change the DNS settings on your computer. You can follow this guide for more info.

Mobile

If you are trying to bet from your mobile, then things can be a tad easier. Located within your cell (well any modern handset) will be a GPS receiver. Using satellites and a mix of 4G/5G signal, or Wi-Fi, an operator can pinpoint your exact location. Think Google Maps or dare we say it Pokemon Go. They know exactly where you are to within a few inches. Each CO sports betting app will need to get access to your location to prove you are in a legal state.

Allowing location setting on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod:

Open up settings, then follow these steps: Settings » Privacy » Location services (set to on) » Access the app and confirm to share your location.

Allowing location setting on an Android mobile or tablet (Samsung, Nokia, HTC, OnePlus, etc):

Open the setting option, then select Settings » Location (set to on) » App permissions » Locate the app, then Select Allow all the time or when using the app.

This process may vary from manufacture to manufacture on Android but the process is still the same.

If after doing this you still have problems, you may have an issue with your GPS receiver. But you can try these steps:

  • Uninstall the app and reinstall
  • Restart your mobile
  • Force stop the app (find the app in your app list and press Force Stop)
  • Try another app that checks location (Google maps)
  • Turn GPS on and off

You can also download apps to help confirm your location such as GeoGuard from iTunes or in Google Play.

Is there a way around geolocation?

As we mentioned earlier, confirming your location is a legal requirement by a sportsbook to prove you are in a state where sports betting is legal. If you are inside your house, the bar, a casino in Black Hawk, works office, car, stadium and you cant place your bet, it’s annoying. Bettors in the past have always tried to find ways around geolocation by using dodgy offshore operators who will take bets from most states.

They have also tried to use a VPN to try and trick or fluff your location. A VPN will use servers located in other areas to try and place you somewhere that you are not. Legal sportsbooks do not allow the use of VPN’s. You do need to be in one of the legalized states before you can bet.

If you try and use a VPN to place bets with a sportsbook where betting is not legally allowed, you can have your account suspended indefinitely. Spoofing your location to gamble online is not recommended. You can’t use a geocomply VPN to spoof your location, the operators and geocomply will pick up on this and your bets won’t be placed.

If you are in a legal state and still experiencing issues, you can also try one of these recommended sportsbook operators who have all excelled in our geolocation testing

Since sports betting went live in Colorado, we have used all the available sportsbooks and DraftKings geolocation has always performed the best for us, closely followed by BetMGM geolocation. This has been on the iPhone, a Samsung Galaxy, and also a laptop. Like any operator, DraftKings checking your location is vital before being able to actually place your bet. We did use the Draftkings geolocation plugin on a chrome browser which worked pretty darn well.

Player location checks are essential to confirm where you are before an operator accepts your bets. If they are found to be taking wagers from anyone outside of a state they are not licensed in, they will have their license revoked, so you can see why they are so keen to make sure you are betting legally. Sure, no operator wants to cause bettors trouble in placing a bet, but as it heavily relies on technology, sometimes, this breaks.

A sportsbook will sometimes ask you to confirm your location straight after registration and many encourage the use of a plugin right away. This is normal so don’t panic.
